FCC bans nearly all wireless routers sold in US

Is it possible to set up a home wireless network without buying a wireless router? I want to leverage a wireless access point. I don't mind a static setup on the home PC but I don't know how to work around the network address translation issues without using a real router.
Almost every new wireless router for use in US homes is now banned from sale within the country under a new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruling. The FCC says that all routers made outside the US “pose unacceptable risks to the national security of the United States or the safety and security of United States persons”
Ethernet ports are usually just relegated to connecting computers to routers to facilitate an internet connection, but they're capable of much more than that.
